1964-65

Coach Jerry Shelton is carried off the floor
by his team after the Falcons crushed East
Rome to win the 16-team Northwest Georgia
Christmas Invitational Tournament in Rome.
According to Coach Shelton, this 1964-65
Berry basketball team was the best of all the
teams he coached at Berry. The team
opened the season by winning its first 17
games without a loss.
One of the amazing events of the season
occurred in the Region Tournament
semi-finals when the Falcons qualified for
the State Tournament by beating
Cartersville in seven overtimes. Tommy
Butler tipped in an errant shot at the buzzer
(and just before the stroke of midnight) in
the 7th overtime to win the game. Berry drew
Clarkston, the state's number 1 ranked
team, in the state tournament in Macon.
Even though Berry took a brief lead with
three minutes to go in the game, the Falcons
fell to Clarkston 50-45.
The 1964-65 team won more games in one
season (30) than any team in school history
and it was the last Berry team to play in the
Georgia High School State Tournament.
