World traveler, cosmopolitan and oilman. Those are all descriptions that fit Gregg Magee quite nicely.
Gregg has his official home in Austria, but he has worked in Saudi Arabia for Saudi Aramco for the
last 30 years. Saudi Aramco, the national oil company of Saudi Arabia (formerly just "Aramco",
standing for the Arabian American Oil Company), is the largest oil corporation in the world and the
world's largest in terms of proven crude oil reserves and production. Headquartered in Dhahran,
Saudi Arabia, Saudi Aramco also operates the world's largest single hydrocarbon network, the Master
Gas System.
Recently, Gregg accepted a consulting position with UK-based Foster Wheeler, a global engineering
and construction contractor. He is the Construction Manager on a causeway project for the Manifa
offshore oil field in Saudi Arabia. This new project in behalf of Saudi Aramco is expected to take
several years and will add access to additional crude oil in the Manifa oil field.
Now Gregg has a new assignment. Here is how he described his new job. "I now have the chance to
be involved (from the onset) in a project that dwarfs anything I've ever done before. Aramco has hired
EC Harris (management consultants) to work with them on the design, engineering and construction
of the King Abdullah Sports City (KASC). EC Harris / Aramco offered me the position of In-Kingdom
Project Director and I couldn't refuse. This is a HUGE project! It is part of a bigger scheme to develop
an area north of Jeddah on the Red Sea. The King Abdullah University for Science and Technology
(KAUST) has just been completed. The King Abdullah Economic City is in the works. I honestly don't
know what else is planned, but I guess as long as oil is $85 a barrel, more will follow. KASC is to be
completed by 2014 at the latest. That will be a challenge.
Gregg grew up in the Garden Lakes area of Rome and attended Berry Academy all four years from
1967-71. Gregg was the class valedictorian in 1971 and just an all-around good guy. His younger
brother and sister, Shane ('74) and Yoli ('76), are also Berry Academy graduates. Though Gregg gets
back to the U.S. occasionally, we have been unable to get him to one of the class reunions. We hope
that we can get him scheduled for our next one.
