"A Sleep Doctor on the Move....Literally"
Arthur Saus
Arthur Saus is a man on the move. Art is an anesthesiologist with specialties in cardiac anesthesia
and pain management, but what makes his professional life so interesting is that he is a
locum tenens
physician. A
locum tenens (Latin for "holding the place" or "placeholder") physician is similar to a
full-time temporary in other lines of work. As a
locum tenens, Art has traveled and relocated
extensively throughout the southeast.

In a recent magazine article about his experiences, Art explained how he came to be a
locum tenens.
"We (he and his wife Bonna) were moving every year or two, and actually enjoyed trying out each new
place. But I definitely did not enjoy terminating each position and searching for a new one. It was also
a real headache each time we had to find somewhere new to live, and Bonna finally pointed out that
we were actually living the
locum tenens lifestyle -- but with all of the headaches and none of the
conveniences."

Once Art decided to give the
locum tenens approach a try, he's never looked back. "It turns out that
practicing medicine this way is so much fun," he said. "We have been all over the South, including
Florida, Kentucky, the Carolinas, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Alabama and Georgia, staying in
each place anywhere from 2 weeks to 14 months. And, the professional benefits have been fantastic."

As a young boy, Art left his home in Piedmont, AL to attend Berry Academy. After four years at the
Academy, Art then attended and graduated from Berry College in 1973. After working for a few years
as a chemist, Art entered medical school at the University of South Carolina, courtesy of the U.S.
Army. He spent four years of residency at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, DC and four
more years of Army service in South Carolina. Art then left the Army to enter private practice.

At the present time, Art is on assignment in Ocala, FL. He sums up his professional life this way. "As
an independent contractor, I have had more new experiences than I could have imagined. Thanks to
locum tenens, I have seen diverse places, worked with new technology and found my niche in hearts.
And the lifestyle has given me a chance to make many new friends."
