Brief History of Berry Academy and Berry College |
![]() Dr. Jerry C. Davis Class of 1961 |
Dr. Jerry Davis is a 1961 graduate of the Mount Berry School for Boys. His personal story of the struggle to find his way in life is an incredible and heartwarming one. A small portion of his search for God’s plan for him is recounted in the article "On the Right Path" which appeared in the February 2004 edition of Guideposts magazine. With special permission from Guideposts we are able to reprint and publish this inspiring article about one of our Berry brothers. From teenage runaway to broke and homeless to college president, it is an amazing journey. Today, Dr. Jerry Davis is President of College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, MO. Oliver Welch is a 1952 graduate of the Martha Berry School for Boys who attended Berry College and received his doctoral degree from Georgia State University. He has distinguished himself in service to several Georgia governors and earned professional designations in numerous fields, including urban planning (AIP), accounting (CPA), law (JD), real estate (CPM) and financial planning (CFP). Early in his career, Mr. Welch assisted in the establishment of Georgia’s first statewide budget bureau and was responsible for a report, “Georgia’s Greatest Investment – Education,” that helped lead to changes in the state’s education funding formula and the reorganization of the Georgia Department of Education (GDE). Before the age of 30, he found himself serving as deputy superintendent of the reorganized GDE. At 31, Mr. Welch was tasked with establishing Georgia’s first statewide planning agency, |
recruiting a diverse group of more than 100 professionals from throughout the nation to act as a "think tank" for the governor’s office. Later, he served as the first director of Georgia’s Bureau of Community Affairs and was chairman of the governor’s computer advisory board. As his career progressed, Mr. Welch served in executive management positions in several public and private corporations and established his own wealth management corporation. He also served on the faculty of several universities and provided leadership for numerous civic organizations, among them the Northwest Council of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce (which he served as president), the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and the Buckhead Business Association. Most recently, the Atlanta resident co-authored the first book on the history of the financial planning profession, to be published later this year by John Wiley & Sons as part of the 40th anniversary of the profession. |

Mount Berry School for Boys Mt. Berry, GA The school provided a very special atmosphere for those who attended, not just an atmosphere for learning, but an environment that facilitated the growing and maturing of young boys into young men. And, at different times in the school's history, girls also attended and benefited from Martha Berry's vision. The school closed in June of 1983, but this website will aid in maintaining the memories for years to come. This website also gives Berry Academy alums a place to reconnect with classmates. There are many pages of pictures from our reunions in 1994, 1999, 2004 and 2009. After surfing through this website, I hope you will click on the "Send E-Mail" button and send me a quick e-mail or post a message on our Message Board or sign our Guestbook. Let me know what you think and tell me how we can improve the site. We have found several "Lost" classmates and they have been excited to learn about their old friends and reconnect with their Berry past. I have addresses for many of the Berry graduates and faculty members. Maybe I can reconnect you with a long lost friend, your old Berry roommate or a faculty member that you want to contact.
Berry Academy most certainly had a beautiful campus, but it was our relationships and our shared experiences that made our years at Berry special. I hope you enjoy the website. |
We need to find Barry Donald Croft from the Berry Academy class of 1969. He has been considered "Lost" by the alumni office for many years. If you have any idea where he might be, please hit the "Send E-Mail" button above and send me a note. Your help in locating Barry would be greatly appreciated. |
